PROGRAMS & PROJECTS.

Hatcliffe Extension Charitable Trust (HECT) was established to oversee the running and maintenance of the Mosque on stand 11799 and to assist the greater community in Hatcliffe Extension. The Trustees are like-minded people who embody the Islamic principles of peace, tolerance, integrity, compassion and humanity. The Trustees share a common goal to uplift the greater community especially the young men and women to access skills to become self-sufficient.

HECT is also keen to raise awareness of the socio-economic constraints in the community especially the most vulnerable elderly, child headed families and AIDS orphans and women.

We provide ongoing support the Hatcliffe Extension community through a number of initiatives. These initiatives were being leveraged to support residents with the current Covid-19 challenges.

SOUP KITCHEN AND FEEDING PROGRAM

A Soup Kitchen/ Feeding program, was started to feed the very vulnerable in the Hatcliffe Extension Community and the nearby squatter camp. 420 people (100 families)– Grandparents with their AIDS orphan grandchildren, child headed families and the disabled were provided with a nutritious meal once a day from Monday to Friday. At the start of the Covid -19 pandemic Lockdown, we were unable to continue with the Soup Kitchen, each family receives a monthly food hamper. We also had 10 hamper beneficiaries that converted to Islam.

BOREHOLES

HECT sunk 6 boreholes which among others, provide water to residents in the surrounding areas.

NEW SKILLS TRAINING CENTRE FOR YOUNG WOMEN

A vocational school for young women, funded by a grant fron the Islamic Development Bank, is currently under construction and it is anticipated to open early 2023. The school will cater for young women who have not completed high school, teaching them skills in cooking, knitting, sewing and arts and crafts to assist them in gaining self -sustainability. Once the students have completed the vocational courses, they’ll do a business course to help them to market their goods. HECT will encourage the young women to produce high quality goods for the export market. Girls who have completed high school will have a chance to do the International Computer Driving License and will be assisted in getting meaningful work. A jewelry manufacturing workshop is also planned. We also plan to run adult education classes as there are many women who cannot speak or read in English and are unable to assist their children with school work. The training centre is now complete but we have not been able to equip or furnish the building to date. However with a small grant from OCAD University Toronto Canada, a pilot project was undertaken in February 2023 where for 12 weeks (2 days/week) 10 ladies attended a Menstrual Hygiene Management Program. 10 ladies were taught to sew and make reusable sanitary wear ( reusable sanitary pads, panties and period panties). This skill will empower them to become self-sustainable and try to earn a living. The ladies were instructed in personal hygiene and basic physiology and also in finance and the what discarding of one-use sanitary towels do to the environment

LIBRARY / READING ROOM

HECT constructed a prefabricated library/reading room to encourage the children at a local primary school to speak English

OTHER PROJECTS

Zimbabwe experienced a very long, cold winter in 2020. A blanket drive realised 1500 comforters which were given to the vulnerable in Hatcliffe Extension, squatter camps, orphanages and the homeless.

Hundreds of school boys received new uniforms donated by Paramount Garments in Harare. A donation of men’s trousers was received by HECT. These were distributed to high school boys and men in the area. All these were also donated by Paramount Garments in Harare.

During the Covid -19 pandemic we focused our efforts to support the Hatcliffe Extension community in line with the core guidance around prevention and containment which was communicated by the World Health Organization (WHO) - i.e. handwashing, avoid touching face, and social distancing.
